Pole position for Artem in Abu Dhabi
With second place in the F2 drivers’ series and the teams’ overall championship still up for grabs in the Abu Dhabi season finale, Russian Time made a strong start when Artem Markelov claimed his first F2 pole position at the impressive Yas Marina circuit.
Markelov lapped in 1m47.181s to take top spot, ahead of Racing Engineering driver Nyck De Vries (1m47.387s) and Prema’s Antonio Fuoco (1m47.575s). Team mate Luca Ghiotto (1m47.753s) starts the race seventh on the grid, just behind newly-crowned series champion Charles Leclerc.
Artem Markelov: «That was a great session and everything went really well. After the first run I had almost half a second advantage and I was feeling like Hamilton! I improved further on the second run and ended up two tenths clear. It’s a credit to the team, which has been working hard since the last race at Jerez. The set-up felt pretty perfect, no understeer, no oversteer, and all I need now is a good start tomorrow!”»
Luca Ghiotto: «Congratulations to Artem. It looks like being a highly competitive race with just two tenths covering third through eighth places on the grid. There’s still a lot to play for this weekend and I will be chasing another consistent result and more strong points in the feature race tomorrow and in Sunday’s sprint race.»
Svetlana Strelnikova (Team principal): «Even though there had been a long gap between the penultimate race in Spain at the beginning of last month and now, it’s great that Artem has been able to continue the momentum after his fine Sprint race win at Jerez. Luca is also looking competitive and has produced some really fighting drives already this year, so as a team we will be doing all we can with just a handful of points covering ourselves, Prema and DAMS in the team’s championship. We will go for it!”
