Artem Markelov (1m40.590s) will start Silverstone’s feature race eighth on the grid after coping with some difficult circumstances in qualifying. Team mate Tadasuke Makino (1m41.493s) also had a troubled session with a downshift issue restricting him to 19th on the grid.
Pole position was taken by new series leader George Russell (1m39.989s), ahead of Alexander Albon and Antonio Fuoco.
Artem Markelov: “On my first push lap there was a red flag and I had to return to the pits, so the edge was taken off those tyres and I was down in P14 after the first run. Then, on my second run, I made a mistake at Turn 1 and had to abort the lap. I then had to wait two laps to push again so that I wasn’t impeded by people on cooldown laps. So, again, I didn’t get the first lap out of the tyres and P8, while not great, was not so bad. I can definitely race well from there!”
Tadasuke Makino: “In practice I was less than two tenths behind Artem but then in qualifying I had a downshift isue. Every corner was a struggle and the car was understeering. That costs you a lot of time around a quick circuit like Silverstone. Hopefully we can solve the problem and I will be able to go forward in the race.”
Svetlana Strelnikova (Team principal): “Artem did a strong job considering he did not get the ‘golden lap’ out of either set of tyres. That can cost you half a second, which would have put him right in among the pace setters. With scorching track temperatures around 50 degrees in such an un-British summer (!), it is going to be an interesting race with tyre management no doubt playing an important part. Anything is possible for both Artem and Tada.”
