After an almost two-month break since Sochi, the F2 field assembled at the impressive Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi for the final round of the 2018 Championship. This was the scene of Artem Markelov’s first pole position last year and once again Russian Time looks to be in strong shape with Artem (1m49.647s) lining up fourth for tomorrow’s Feature race and team make Tadasuke Makino (1m50.180s) ninth quickest.
George Russell (1m49.251s) claimed pole position for a race in which he aims to clinch the championship, ahead of Nyck De Vries (1m49.541s) and Nicholas Latifi (1m49.647s).
Artem Markelov: "The set-up did not feel great in practice but the car was much better in qualifying and I did decent laps. Qualifying is important here because it’s not the easist track on which to overtake despite the long back straight, so I should be well-placed to finish the season in the strongest way starting from the second row. I will give it everything to be on the podium."
Tadasuke Makino: "I had a coming together with Luca Ghiotto for the third time this season, which wasn’t ideal, but it’s good to qualify in the top 10 again. The third sector takes quite a bit out of the rear tyres and so the strategy will be important in the race and hopefully I can capitalise on my qualifying and score more points."
Svetlana Strelnikova (Team principal): "It seems like a long time since we have been racing but you can’t fail to be impressed by the circuit and facilities here and I hope that the drivers can finish the season on a high for the team. It looks promising because Artem’s qualifying puts him right in touch and nobody can have any doubts about his racing ability. Congratulations to Tada as well because Yas Marina is a technical track and he has done a fine job to qualify the car in the top 10 on his first sighting of it. Let’s hope for a double helping of points tomorrow!"
