Russian Time’s Japanese rookie driver Tadasuke Makino impressed once more with a top 10 qualifying position as the F2 field has its second race in a France-Austria-UK triple-header. After setting 12th quickest time in practice, Makino found almost eight tenths of a second to set a qualifying time (1m14.201s) that was 0.66s behind George Russell’s pole position mark and only 0.38s behind Sergio Sette Camara’s third place time.

Team mate and series front-runner Artem Markelov had another problematic qualifying session, suffering a repeat of the power delivery issues that spoiled his race weekend in Paul Ricard a week ago. That translated into 18th place on tomorrow’s Feature race grid and, providing a solution can be found, he faces a difficult race tomorrow. Hopefully his task will be eased by a third DRS zone at the Red Bull Ring, which should aid overtaking. .”

Russian Time failed to add to its drivers’ or teams’ championship points tally after problematic races for both Tadasuke Makino and Artem Markelov.

After finishing ninth on the road in Saturday’s Feature race, Tadasuke collected an additional two points and was promoted to eighth when podium finisher Roberto Merhi was found to have contravened the mimimum tyre pressure regulations and was disqualified. Significantly, that meant Tadasuke lined up on pole position for today’s reverse-grid race race, but continuing start problems meant that he was down to fifth place by Turn 1. His troubles worsened when throttle sensor issues led to the engine safety mode cutting in, causing the Japanese F2 rookie to retire just five laps into the 21-lap race.

For Renault development driver Artem, more sensor issues prompted a repeat of Saturday’s starting grid problem and for the second successive day, he stalled on the line – problems that also afflicted series leader Lando Norris on Saturday and Feature race winner George Russell today.

There were mixed emotions for Russian Time in France today. Japanese driver Tadasuke Makino continued his impressive rookie F2 season with another points score when he finished ninth amid tricky mixed conditions that saw him narrowly miss out on eighth position and Sunday’s Sprint race pole position.

Artem Markelov, meanwhile, was once again affected by the difficulty of getting this year’s cars off the grid as both he and series leader Lando Norris failed to get underway as the lights went out. After being pushed into the pitlane and finding himself a lap down, Artem regularly set lap times that were comparable or even stronger than the race leaders. Despite his best efforts, 15th was the result and he faces another challenging race tomorrow.
