Tadasuke Makino (1m28.620s) turned in an impressive performance to qualify seventh for just his third F2 start at Circuit de Catalunya, with a time that was only a quarter of a second away from a place on the front row of the Barcelona grid.
Team mate Artem Markelov (1m29.585s), meanwhile, had another frustrating qualifying Friday. Starting 19th he faces a tough feature race on a track at which overtaking is never easy. Markelov ran wide at the fast, uphill Turn 9 on his first run, in a car he found unbalanced and was never happy with.

Tadasuke Makino drove a good race to finish 10th in the Baku sprint race taking into consideration a down-on-power engine that left him a sitting duck on Baku City Circuit’s 2.1km main straight. Without that, the young Japanese driver, who was sixth at the end of the first lap, looked well set to add to the two points he scored in the feature event.

The team had more engine issues with Artem Markelov’s car after a failure put him out of Saturday’s main event. With a new power unit installed overnight, Markelov was the latest to suffer the clutch difficulties that have plagued a number of drivers this year. After stalling on the grid and being started in the pitlane, Artem suffered a loss of engine power on the opening lap and was forced to retire the car. GP3 champion George Russell took his first F2 win.

We said yesterday that Russian Time would have its work cut out to achieve a podium finish in the first F2 feature race of the season after a difficult qualifying day, but Russian Renault F1 test and development driver Artem Markelov clearly hadn’t read that script! The 23-year-old lined up 17th on the grid, stalled, and was forced to start from the pit lane, from where he produced one of his trademark fighting race performances to finish a fabulous third behind Carlin drivers Lando Norris and Sergio Sette Camara.
