Artem Markelov finished his GP2 season in fine style, scoring a double points finish in Abu Dhabi with seventh place in today's sprint race, adding to his feature race podium in yesterday's feature race.
Team mate Raffaele Marciello finished the race 13th, falling out of the top 10 on the last lap as his tyres went away. The result meant that he finished joint third in the championship, with 159 points, behind new champion Pierre Gasly (219) and Antonio Giovinazzi (211).
The season's final race was won by British driver Alex Lynn, ahead of Venezuelan Johnny Cecotto.
Artem Markelov: Despite the long straight in Abu Dhabi it is quite difficult to overtake when there is no variation in tyre strategy. I tried all I could to pass Giovinazzi, getting very close to it at Turn 8 on one lap, but ultimately I wasn't quite able to make it. I want to thank the team for a really good season which has seen me win in Monte Carlo and score another feature race podium here in Abu Dhabi.
Raffaele Marciello: As Artem said it was diffiuclt to make progress out there and it was disappointing to miss out on points for just the third time this season. But I think that 19 scores in 22 starts was the most consistent performance across the whole grid and so we can reflect on a successful season.
Svetlana Strelnikova: It was a shame for Lello that he fell away at the end but congratulations to Artem on a double points score – his fifth of the season -- here in Abu Dhabi. His fighting qualities have been a feature of the season and I think he can look forward to an even stronger campaign in 2017. It was frustrating to lose second place in the teams' championship by just two points, but I want to thank everyone for their great efforts and the excellent team spirit. We will be back!
